Luis Alberto Moreno

Luis Alberto Moreno Mejía ( May 3, 1953 in Colombia) is a Colombian politician and since 2005 President of the Inter-American Development Bank.

Biography

After school he studied business administration and economics at Florida Atlantic University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA ) from. A subsequent post-graduate studies at the American Graduate School of International Management at Thunderbird University, he finished in 1977 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

For he produced between January 1982 and September 1990 TV news program Hoy, he received several awards for journalistic achievements. For his outstanding work in the field of journalism, he received the Neiman Fellowship and was thus able to operate 1991 research studies at Harvard University from September 1990 to June.

From 1991 to 1994 he worked during the presidency of César Gaviria in leading positions in the government. Initially he was between December 1991 to July 1992 President of the Institute for Industrial Promotion IFI (Instituto de Fomento Industrial ), industry financing and holding company of some of the country's largest public companies. In this role, he led a successful privatization program and also developed new financial instruments for private industry to take advantage also of economic liberalization policy of the government Gaviria.

President Gaviria then appointed him in July 1992 to the Minister of Economic Development. During his tenure, he modernized the Ministry and its subordinate authorities and conducted at the same time the introduction and implementation of industrial policy and competitiveness strategy. As a minister, he was also the social investment policy of the government and particularly for the strategy of housing for low income earners.

After leaving the government, he was director of the 1994 Presidential election campaign of Andrés Pastrana, but was defeated by the Ernesto Samper in January.

After he was between November 1994 and August 1997 Senior Advisor of Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo Group, the leading banking and financial group in Colombia with assets of 10 billion U.S. $, he was from August 1997 to July 1998 Representative for the Andean region of WestSphere Capital, a private equity firm that focuses dealt with opportunity investment in Latin America.

Between July 1998 and 2005, he was Ambassador to the United States, and thus as it came at a time in tangible improvements in the diplomatic relations between the two countries. As President of the IDB, he also acts as Chairman of the Board of the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC ) and as Chairman of the Awards Committee of the Multilateral Investment Fund ( MIF).

For his service he was awarded several times and received, among others, on 2 August 2002, the Grand Cross of the Orden de Boyacá, Colombia's highest honor.
