CD Veracruz

The Estadio Luis de la Fuente El Pirata is a football stadium in the Mexican municipality of Boca del Rio, an adherent to the port city of Veracruz suburb. The stadium is used for CD Veracruz, better known by his nickname Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz ( the Red Sharks of Veracruz ), as a home ground.

History

The initiative for the construction of the stadium came from Pepe Lajud, who was then the owner of the CD Veracruz.

The official inauguration of the stadium took place on March 19, 1968, but without the otherwise customary opening match.

Received its current name the stadium by a unanimous decision of the City Council of Boca del Río at its meeting of 22 May 1981. With the name of the stadium honors the greatest football talent that football has produced in Vera Cruz, the former national player Luis de la Fuente, who died in 1972.

The official capacity of the stadium is today - according to sources - at about 30000-32000 and was never higher than 36,000 in the past. Due to the increased popularity of the club, which reached its peak in the 1989/90 season, up to 40,000 spectators crowded into the stadium on some games.
