Luki Botha

Lukas " Luki " Botha ( born January 16, 1930 in Pretoria, † 1 October 2006) was a South African racing driver.

Botha went in the early 1960s single-seater racing in Rhodesia and South Africa. He finished second in the Grand Prix of Rhodesia on a Brabham BT11 in late 1966. Just three weeks later, he had his first and only use in Formula 1 to the Grand Prix of South Africa in 1967 at Kyalami, he started on a Brabham BT17 Climax, he announced himself as a privateer. The race was not very pleasant because Botha spent 20 laps in the pits for repairs after a collision at the start. He was at the end of the race in the field on the way, but was not considered due to excessive residue on the winner.

1968 Botha swapped the Climax engine against a Repco engine and drove on race in the countries in southern Africa. A serious accident at a race meeting in Mozambique ended the career in the same year. Nine spectators were killed when Botha lost control of the Brabham and turned off the track. Botha was unhurt, but he no longer raced.

After the end of his racing career Botha worked as a civil engineer in Soweto and returned in the 1990s, returned to South Africa. He settled where he lived with his family in his hometown of Pretoria until his death in October 2006.
