Luo languages
The Luo languages are a subgroup of the westnilotischen languages within the Nilo-Saharan language family. It consists of 15 languages.
Structure
In the following outline of the Luo languages is de language code according to ISO 639-3 and in parentheses is given the main distribution area of the individual languages in brackets:
- Northern group: Anuak [ anu ] (Sudan)
- Boron: Boron Belanda [ bxb ] (Sudan)
- Jur: Luwo [ lwo ] (Sudan)
- Maban - Burun: Maban: Mabaan [ mfz ] (Sudan)
- JumJum [ jum ] (Sudan)
- Adhola [ adh ] (Uganda)
- Kuman: Kumam [ kdi ] (Uganda)
- Luo Acholi: Alur - Acholi: Alur [ ALZ ] (Democratic Republic of Congo)
- Lango - Acholi: Lango [ laj ] (Uganda)
- Acholi [ ah ] (Uganda)
Largest languages are Alur ( 1.2 million speakers) and Luo ( about 3.5 million speakers).
