Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 29 to 36 millimeters. The color of the forewing upper side shows an extremely wide color range and varies from whitish over beige, ocher, yellow-brown, gray-brown to reddish brown. Even almost black specimens are found, from the as. armoricana described. However, these and many other color variations forms have no taxonomic significance. The midfield is more or less obscured. The region between the outer transverse line and the wavy line stands out mostly as a bright band. Ring and pin flaws are cored whitish and sometimes light brown. The rear upper wing surface is colored without markings and milky white.

Caterpillar

Full-grown caterpillars are translucent yellow brown to yellow gray and resemble grubs.

Similar Species

  • The clay-colored Graswurzeleule ( Luperina testacea ) ( Denis & Schiffer Müller, 1775) is drawn slightly larger and less contrasty. The bright band in the Postdiskalregion the front upper wing surface is missing or unclear.
  • Luperina diversa (Staudinger, 1892) is to distinguish the almost white blemishes.

Due to the large variability in color of Luperina dumerilii there are still sometimes very large similarities to the above species. Therefore, to reliably determine recommended a genital examination.

Distribution and habitat

The distribution area includes the Mediterranean, as well as warmer areas in Central and South Eastern Europe. Since 1858, sometimes moth be detected as vagrants in the south of England. In Turkey, the species is by Luperina dumerilii hirsuta (Wagner, 1831), in Jordan by Luperina dumerilii sancta (Staudinger, 1891) and in Sardinia with Luperina dumerilii hartigi Ronkay & Varga, represented in 1985. Preferred habitat of Dumeril Graswurzeleule are dry, bushy grasslands, sunny slopes, grassy wine regions and nations.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation a year. Main flight period are the months of August to November. Sometimes they were also found in December. They are nocturnal and visit very much artificial light sources, rarely also bait. As a food of the living from September tracked the roots of various grasses are given in the literature. They overwinter and pupate in July of the following year in the ground. A successful breeding was carried out with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne ).
