Luquillo, Puerto Rico

Luquillo is a city in the northeast of the U.S. foreign territory Puerto Rico. It is located west of Fajardo, and east of Río Grande. The city is divided into six districts, and in 2010 had about 20,000 inhabitants.

History

Luquillo was founded in 1797 and was named after the Indian cacique Loquillo, who died in 1513 a few years after the last rebellion of the Indians. Throughout its history it was, mainly because of their ability to make different nicknames that persist to this day: La Capital del Sol ( Sun Capital ), La Riviera de Puerto Rico ( The coast of Puerto Rico ) and Los Come Cocos ( Coconut Eater ).

Policy

2012 Jesús Márquez Rodríguez was elected mayor and managed since then the city. Luquillo is part of Senate District VIII and is represented nationally by two senators, Pedro A. Rodríguez and Luis Daniel Rivera.

Flag

The flag of the city consists of three horizontal bands; a thin yellow stripe in the middle and one each, a blue and a green stripe double-wide top and bottom. The blue color represents the sky and the sea, the yellow color for the beaches and the green color for the species-rich vegetation in the mountains. In the center of the flag, the coat of arms is housed.

The coat of arms shows in the middle of three green, interconnected mountains and down a bay with alternating blue and silver waves; both symbols are placed on a golden background. The upper third of the coat of arms shows on a blue background three green twigs of the iris, which is contrary to their natural color displayed in white. The Coat of Arms of shows three golden castle towers. With the exception of these towers, the coat of arms is surrounded on both sides by a green palm branch, which crosses at the lower end with the palm of the other hand.

Tourism

About a highway that runs along the northern coast of the country, you can reach the beach Luquillos also from the capital San Juan quickly. At a length of nearly two kilometers numerous palm trees line the beach, which is one of the most popular and most beautiful public beaches in the northeast of the country. Especially at Monserrate Beach are above average to meet a lot of locals. La Pared Beach is popular with surfers.
