Lusophonie ( Lusofonia ) is the name given to the Portuguese- speaking world. The term was made analogous to the designation Francophonie for the French- speaking world and is derived from the Roman name Lusitania for today from Portugal. In contrast to the Francophonie Lusophonie is not a political concept, but includes all speakers of Portuguese.

The Lusophone includes the following states and territories:

  • America: Brazil
  • Africa: Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea- Bissau, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe
  • Asia: Macau, East Timor
  • Europe: Portugal

These countries are grouped together since 1996 in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, after the pattern of the English Commonwealth of Nations. 2006 " Games of the Lusophone " carried out along the lines of the Commonwealth Games and the Jeux de la Francophonie for the first time.
