Lycorias
Lykorias ( Latinized Greek Λυκωριάς, lycorias ) is a Nereid in Greek mythology.
Importance
Like all Nereids also provides the Lykorias a divine hypostasis of the properties of the sea or one of the properties and things that people hoped for from the sea, represents the Nereids specifically nymphs of the Mediterranean, while the nymphs of other seas are called Oceanids. They protect shipwrecked sailors and entertained with games. They are companions of the god Poseidon. In many ancient Greek representations, the Nereids riding on the backs of dolphins. Lykorias represents the first light of the sea, which is why it is also described as yellow Nereid.
Historical mention
The Nereid Lykorias is mentioned in Virgil and Hyginus.
Descent
Lykorias is - like all the Nereids 50-100 ( depending on the author ) - a subsidiary of the Greek sea god Nereus ( son of Gaia and of the Pontos ) and the Oceanid Doris ( daughter of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys ).
