Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 6-12 millimeters. They have a long and slender figure. The front wings are (metallic - gray example ) which usually shiny metallic colored or metallic patterns. Some species, however, are dyed plain. The hind wings, which are plain for all species, are narrower than the front wings and fringed in some species at the end. They have long antennae that can reach the length of the body and which are almost unkempt even in the males. The Maxillarpalpen (pine key) are much reduced form, and consist of one to three segments. The labial ( lip switch) in some species, however, are fully formed, re-formed shortly or also in others. The first pair of legs is very hairy. In the rest position they lay their very narrow front and rear wings folded on the abdomen.

The forewings have 7-10 wing veins with one or two Analadern (1b or 1b and 1c ). The hind wings have a strong back Flügeladerung formed with three to six cores and no Analadern.

Way of life

The eggs are either smooth or slightly structured. The nocturnal larvae have a large range of food plants and eat minierend in leaves. You put it in " snake-like " transitions. They pupate in a cocoon either on the ground or on the leaves, outside the mine.

Some species, such as the introduced from Africa to South America Leucoptera caffeina that affects coffee plants, are pests in agriculture.
