Lythrypnus dalli

Blaustreifengrundeln, Underwater in San Clemente Iceland.

The Blaustreifengrundel ( Lythrypnus dalli ) or Catalina Goby is a small marine fish that occurs in the eastern Pacific, from Morro Bay to the Gulf of California and to the west up to Guadalupe. It was first described by Santa Catalina Iceland before Los Angeles.

Features

The fish are only 6.5 inches long and are conspicuously colored bright red. Four to nine iridescent blue horizontal stripes extend over the head and body. You are narrower on the back. The first dorsal fin is high, especially in the males.

Way of life

The fish inhabit rocky bottoms and appear quite open, Retire at threat but in crevices, holes or between the spines of sea urchins back. You are revier forming. The females lay their eggs in empty shells. The nest is then guarded by the male. Blaustreifengrundel prefer cool water 15-18 ° C, hold only in the winter in shallow water, and hiking in the summer to more than 50 meters deep. They feed mainly on small crustaceans. Often they are seen zebra along with the similarly colored but averse Lythrypnus.
