Charles Henry Gilbert

In 1883 he graduated with the Ph.D. ( the first there!) from Indiana University in Bloomington at David Starr Jordan ( 1851-1931 ), with whom he was on friendly terms since 1874 ( in Indianapolis ). He first worked as an assistant at his university ( 1880-84 ), then as a lecturer in biology at the University of Cincinnati ( 1884-89 ), of Zoology again in Bloomington ( 1889-91 ) and from then on as a zoology professor at the Stanford University ( Palo Alto, CA ); In 1925 he retired. 1880-1898 he was a member of the U.S. Fish Commission, 1909-27 Administrator for Problems of Salmon Fisheries of the United States. In the U.S. research vessel " Albatross " he was several times, most recently in 1902 (Hawaii) and 1906 (Japan), ichthyologist involved in the exploration of the northern Pacific and described many new species ( 620 ), eg in The Deep -Sea Fishes of the Hawaiian Islands ( 1905) -. With DS Jordan he had already in 1882 published the Synopsis of the Fishes of North America ( about freshwater and marine fish) -. Very early developed Gilbert nature protection originating ideas and warned already in the twenties of impending over-exploitation and extermination of Oncorhynchus populations.

Gilbert was a sharp- minded and very correct personality. It was therefore almost inevitable that it came between him and the also very dedicated captain of the " Albatross " on the Hawaiian trip in the summer of 1902 diverse, often petty a seemingly dispute, especially since the ship (such as the Fisheries Commission itself ) of the U.S. Navy was under, but scientists were civilians and ruled the command hierarchy on board ambiguities.
