M'Bour

Mbour (also M'Bour and Mbour written in Wolof Mbuur ) is a city in the west of Senegal, located on the Petite Côte, approximately 80 km south of the capital Dakar, and about 5 km from the seaside resort of Saly.

Management

In Mbour is the prefecture of the department of Mbour, which is a part of the Thies region.

Geography

Location

The nearest villages are Niakhniakhal Saly, Saly - Portudal, Malikounda Sas, Falokh, Sintiou Mbadane, Nianing et Warang. After Dakar, capital of Senegal, there are 83 kilometers.

Population

1988 was one of Mbour 76 751 inhabitants in 2002 it was 153 503, and after the last official estimate from 2007, the city had 181 825 inhabitants.

Economy

The city has developed a titanium mine around. In addition, the economy is based mainly on fishing and tourism. Mbour has to Dakar 's second largest port of Senegal. It exports to the neighboring countries and in the European Union.

But it is also an important tourist center, both because of the fine and flat sandy beach of Petite- Côte, as also because of the plenty of landed fish. Particularly worth seeing is the Experimental Ecological Reserve of Mbour ( Réserve écologique expérimentale de Mbour ), which was established in 1987.

Twinning

Since 1974, Mbour is twinned with the French port town of Concarneau.

  • Youssou Diagne, politician and former President of the National Assembly of Senegal
  • Demba Diop, former Mayor of Mbour and former Minister of Youth and Sports during the presidency of Leopold Sedar Senghor. After Demba Diop both a high school in Mbour is named, and the Demba Diop Stadium in Dakar.
  • Caroline Faye Diop, wife of Demba Diop. She was the first female MPs in the National Assembly of Senegal, and then under Leopold Sedar Senghor and Minister Abdou Diouf.
