M. S. Swaminathan

MS Swaminathan ( Monkombu Samba Ivan Swaminathan, born August 7, 1925 in Kumbakonam ) is an Indian agricultural scientist. He is considered the father of the Green Revolution in India.

Swaminathan was 1972-1979 Director General of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research and Secretary of Agriculture 1979 until 1980. He was Director General of the International Rice Research Institute ( 1982-88 ) and 1988 President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

In 1988 he was awarded the World Food Prize. With the prize money of U.S. $ 200,000, he financed the MSSRF, MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, an NGO that, among other things Developed strategies for sustainable agricultural development and economic betterment of farmers and an increased employment of poor women in rural areas of India and financed.

Swaminathan was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Philippine Prize and the Indian National Order Padma Vibhushan.
