Macas (city)

Macas is a city in southeastern Ecuador and has about 30,000 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1575 by José Villanueva de Maldonado on behalf of the Governor of Yaguarzongo, Juan Salinas Loyola. Since 1929 Macas is the capital of the province of Morona Santiago.

The city is located on the western edge of the Amazon basin on the eastern slope of the Andes directly. About 50 kilometers north- west is the 5230 m high volcano Sangay with the surrounding Sangay National Park.

Traffic

Immediately on the western outskirts there is a regional airport, from which there are regular connections to Quito and Cuenca.

A well-developed highway Macas is connected via Puyo and Baños and Ambato in the central part of Ecuador. Macadam also lead to Riobamba and Cuenca.
