Luis Macas

Luis Alberto Macas Ambuludí ( born June 3, 1950 in Saraguros ) is an Ecuadorian politician and intellectual of the kichwasprachigen ethnicity of Saraguros.

Macas successfully studied anthropology, linguistics and law. He was a founder of the indigenous umbrella organization of Ecuador CONAIE and Pachakutik party and member of the Ecuadorian Parliament. Under Lucio Gutiérrez 2003 he was Minister of Agriculture, but he soon left together with Nina Pacari the government on the basis of of them perceived as neoliberal policy Gutiérrez '.

Macas was chairman of the CONAIE 1990 to 1996 and from 2004 to 2008. On 24 May 2006 he was set up by Pachakutik as presidential candidate for the election in October 2006. However, he received on the first ballot, only slightly more than 2 percent of the vote and therefore did not draw in the second round.
