Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador

The CONAIE ( Confederación de Nacionalidades indigenous del Ecuador, Alliance of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador, Kichwa: Ecuador Runakunapak Jatun Tantanakuy ) is an umbrella organization representing a majority of the indigenous peoples of Ecuador ( " Indians " ) at national level. It is thus the most important institution in the movement of the indigenous in Ecuador.

It represents the nationalities regarding their legitimate historical claims and demands on the political, economic and socio- cultural level. Representatives of CONAIE are Pachakutik also in the Ecuadorian Parliament.

Chairman

The current chairman is since April 2011 Humberto Cholango. Previous chairman have included Luis Macas, of the office from 1990 to 1996 and from 2004 to 2008 held, and from 2008 to 2011 Marlon Santi from Sarayacu.

History

CONAIE was founded on 16 November 1986 by representatives of grassroots communities and indigenous organizations at the regional level. The main objective was the unification of the previously individually fighting organizations in a federation and the bundling of their historical claims against the Ecuadorian State.

In the night of 2 April 3, 2011 Humberto Cholango was elected at a delegate meeting in Puyo ( Pastaza province ) as Chairman of the gesamtecuadorianischen indigenous federation CONAIE, where he got 1050 votes and 472 delegates so before Auki Tituaña from Cotacachi ( 353 votes) lay and the Shuar Pepe Acacho (205 votes).

CONAIE is an umbrella organization of three regional organizations, which are federations of local organizations themselves:

  • CONFENIAE ( Confederación de Nacionalidades indigenous de la Amazonia Ecuatoriana ) representing indigenous organizations of the Amazon: FOISE, OINCE, OISSE, FCUNAE, FOIN, OPIP, ONHAE, FICSHA and FIPSE.
  • ECUARUNARI (Ecuador Runakunapak Rikcharimuy ) primarily represents organizations of the Kichwa in the highlands: FICI, Pirr, MIC, MIT, FECAB, FRYH, ME, FOICH, UPCCC, UNASAY, ​​CIOIS, UOCE and AMABs QUIJAT.
  • CONAICE ( Coordinadora de Nacionalidades indigenous de la Costa Ecuatoriana ) representing indigenous organizations of the Coast: FECCHE, EPERA, FCG, GTS and FCA.

Participation in development cooperation

In the fight against the contamination of indigenous territories by the oil production, the indigenous movement was such as supported by Medicus Mundi and the Institute of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, University of London. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ ) support the establishment of structures and intercultural bilingual education in schools.

Projects of the World Bank accuses the CONAIE, " to be exclusively political tool for the establishment of control mechanisms within the indigenous movement was not induced and development of indigenous peoples to have ." In July 2005, the CONAIE decided against further cooperation (in particular in relation to the PRODEPINE II project ), accusing the World Bank and the IMF, the extermination of indigenous cultures.
