The Macdonald River is a river in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales. He is a source of the river Namoi River and just East of Niangala on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in the northern tablelands of New England. From there, the Macdonald River flows northwest to the confluence of its main tributary, the Cobra Bald River. It flows through the towns Woolbrook and Bendemeer, as well as the Warrabah National Park, where it flows into the Namoi River.

The Macdonald River and its tributaries above the bridge of the New England Highway at Bendemeer are considered good fish for trout water.

The Namoi River Turtle ( Bell's turtle) found endemic to the headwaters of Namoi River, Gwydir River and Macdonald River.

Since 1985, the New England Highway at Bendemeer passes and crosses on the new TA Perry Bridge the Macdonald River.

On 28 / 29 November 2008 heavy rains triggered a flood of Macdonald River, which saw to it that had to be declared a state of emergency for the area.
