Macieira Brandy

Macieira is a Portuguese brandy.

History

Jose Guilherme Macieira founded 1865, the company named after him, to act along with wine, spirits, wine vinegar and olive oil. In 1885 he began, after a study trip to Cognac, and after his son José Maria Macieira had studied oenology there to make the Conhaque Macieira a cognac. This was before the regional reservation of the name as a protected designation of origin today. The drink is i.a. at the Paris World Exposition in 1900 and 1915 at a memorial for the opening of the Panama Canal a year earlier served.

Since 2001 Macieira belongs to the Pernod Ricard Group.

Production

There the autochthonous - Portuguese grape varieties Arinto, Periquita, Trincadeira and Fernão Pires be used. The brandy obtained therefrom then aged for at least six months in oak barrels. It is offered in addition to its well-known version with 36, with 40 and 43 % vol.

Indicators

Macieira in Portugal is the market leader in brandy area, with 55 % market share and 2 million liters sold ( 2008). The main focus, given the small additional growth opportunities in the domestic, the company presented last on exports, particularly Brazil and China are doing it as future markets.

The drink is now sold in 29 countries on all five continents.
