Macintosh XL

The Macintosh XL was a technically improved successor to the Apple Lisa. He came in 1985 to the market. He has been Upgraded by

  • A built- in Macintosh XL 10 -MB hard drive (compared to an external Apple Lisa HDD )
  • One, compared to the Apple Lisa, expandable memory up to 2 MB,
  • One, because of the new 3.5 -inch floppy disk drive, modified housing design.

Hardware

  • Processor Motorola 68000 @ 5 MHz
  • RAM 512 KB, expandable to 2 MB

The resolution of the screen was initially 720 × 364 pixels. Therefore, there was no square pixels. An optional upgrade ( the software) for the screen allowed the Macintosh XL, the use of square pixels for a better emulation of the Mac OS. After upgrading the screen resolution was 608 x 431 pixels.

Software

Was delivered the Macintosh XL with the software MacWorks XL and an emulation program to use the operating system Lisa OS can.

Outcome

Production of the Macintosh XL was discontinued in 1986. See also the article on the history of Apple's Lisa.

The extension of the Macintosh XL XL leads with respect to the temporal classification of this computer often to error. Thus, the Macintosh XL no technically improved or extended Macintosh is renamed as the successor of Mac, but rather, as the successor of the Apple Lisa 2, which was to be regarded as the granddaddy of all computer named Macintosh.
