Madison Square

Madison Square is a place in New York City in the Flatiron District of the Borough of Manhattan.

The square was named for James Madison - the fourth President of the United States and principal author of the American Constitution. The road surfaces have been significantly reduced as part of the Living Streets Project of New York City in favor of more space for pedestrians and green.

Location

The Madison Square located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway at 23rd Street. The heart of the place is the 2.5 -acre Madison Square Park, which is bounded on the east by Madison Avenue, which begins on the southeast side of the park at 23rd Street, in the south of 23rd Street and north of the 26th Street. In the west the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway limited to Madison Square Park. The square and the park are located at the northern end of the Flatiron District. The term " Madison Square " as a name for the area is barely still in use today. The area north and west of the park is called " NoMad " ( "North of Madison Square Park "). The neighborhood east of the park is called " Rose Hill ".

Madison Square can be reached by the BMT Broadway Line (NR trains ) of the New York City Subway ( 23rd Street Station). In addition, a block away are the bus stops 23rd Street (IND Sixth Avenue Line) and 23rd Street (IRT Lexington Avenue Line).

Well-known building

The Flatiron Building, the Met Life Tower and the New York Life Building are the defining building on Madison Square. A new residential building on 23rd Street - " One Madison Park " - will be similar as the Met Life Tower ( construction started September 2008). Special fame of the place by being named for the Madison Square Garden - a multi-purpose hall for concerts and sporting events, the north-east of the park was located until 1925. Today, Madison Square Garden is no longer in the area.
