Madonna dell'Orto

Maria dell'Orto is a Roman Catholic parish church in Venice in the Cannaregio district. The Gothic church houses important works by Tintoretto and Cima da Conegliano.

History

1350 was of the order of the Humiliati a church which was dedicated to St. Christopher, built and founded a monastery. 1377 a Gothic church was built with donations; The occasion was the transfer of a miraculous statue of the Madonna, which had been found in a nearby garden ( orto ). The church building itself was completed in 1400, the facade, however, could only be completed 1460-1464.

The monastery came after the expulsion of Humiliati to the Canons Regular of San Giorgio in Alga. It was purchased by its dissolution in 1669 -based on the original monastery in San Tommaso dei Borgognoni ( Torcello ) Cistercian monks who remained there until the end of the Republic ( 1797).

Construction and installation

The main facade is oriented to the monumental to the Frari Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo ( Saints John and Paul ) that they modest rezipiert in moderation. The tripartite facade corresponds to the separation of the interior and is also a brick building. The rich tracery windows to Campo date back to around 1440. The portal by Bartolomeo Bon is like those of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, a masterpiece of late Gothic sculpture. The basket arch is crowned by a statue of St. Christopher, the patron saint of merchants. The two flanking columns which each carry a Maria were not added until 1481. The facade further includes rich figural decoration on ( figures of the virtues and the 12 Apostles ).

Links adjoining the church front is the building of the Scuola dei Mercanti.

The floor plan includes six yokes; the three-nave church is flat ceilings. A transept is missing. On the left side of each ship chapels were added in the first four bays, the most northerly family chapel of the Contarini is.

The free-standing next to the Basilica bell tower was built in 1332, added the bell storey 1503. The top of the campanile was according to some researchers consider a model for the " bulbous domes " of the Frauenkirche in Munich. The collapsed after a storm bell dome was built on the initiative of the Austrian Preservation in 1818 again. The interior was restored in the years 1837-1848, 1869, 1892-1893, 1930-1937. A front of 1813 built in the Gothic House Woerlitzer park is modeled on the church facade.

Interior decoration

Jacopo Tintoretto, who lived near the church, this was closely connected. Therefore, we find some of his major works, as well as his grave.
