Mae Wong Dam

The Mae Wong Dam ( Thai เขื่อน แม่ วงก์ RTGS: Khuean Mae Wong) is a planned construction project since 2012 in the east of the National Park Mae Wong in the Thai province of Nakhon Sawan. Completion is scheduled for 2019.

The client is the Royal Irrigation Department. Cost carrier is the Kingdom. Reason is the use of water for agricultural use in the surrounding area for an area of 480 km ². The dam is to accumulate 258 million cubic meters of water to the River. A forest area of 17.6 km ² would be lost or 2.21% of the national parks ( by flooding ).

Criticism

Due to the dam, part of the habitat of the last wild tiger would be threatened in Thailand.

Several thousand opponents organized in September 2013 a protest march from the Kamphaeng Phet province to Bangkok ( 388 km ).
