Magaria is a department in the region of Zinder in Niger.

Geography

The Department is located in the south of the country, bordering Nigeria. It consists of the township Magaria and the rural communities Bandé, Dantchiao, Kwaya, Sassoumbroum, Wacha and Yékoua. The eponymous capital of the department is Magaria. Through the Department of the Wadi Korama runs.

History

After independence in 1960, Niger's territory into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ) was divided. One of them was the district Magaria. 1964 was divided into seven administrative reform Niger departments, the predecessor of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessor of the later departments. As part of the district Magaria was converted to the district Magaria. In 1998, the former arrondissements of Niger were raised to departments, each headed by an appointed Council of Ministers is prefect. The structure of the department in communities exists since the year 2002. Previously, it consisted of the urban center and the cantons Magaria Magaria, Bandé, Dantchiao, Dungass, Gouchi, Mallaoua and Ouacha. 2011 Dungass was dissolved as a separate department from the Department Magaria. The Department has Magaria 2012 579.181 inhabitants according to the census. In the 2001 census, before the dissolution of Dungass, there were 496 874 inhabitants in the census 1988 354 407 inhabitants in the census 1977 273 006 inhabitants.
