Magda Szabó

Magda Szabó [ mɒɡdɒ sɒbo ː ] ( born October 5, 1917 in Debrecen, † 19 November, 2007 Kerepes at Gödöllő ) was a Hungarian writer.

Life

The daughter of a Calvinist family of civil servants completed a teaching degree in classical philology and literature in Debrecen and worked between 1940 and 1945 as a teacher, then she was in the Ministry of Religion and education issues busy. In 1947 she made ​​her debut with the poetry collection lamb. In 1949 it was occupied by a publication ban, which applied until 1959, and dismissed from the civil service.

The best-known works are the novels Szabó's " The fresco " (fresco, 1958), "The Other Esther " ( Az Oz, 1959) and " The Slaughter " ( disznótor, 1960).

1978 Szabó got the Kossuth Prize, Hungary's highest award for artists; 2003 Prix Femina. She was appointed a member of the European Academy of Sciences in 1993 and received in the same year an honorary doctorate from the Reformed Theological University of Debrecen.

Married since 1947 with Szabó was the author and translator Tibor Szobotka.
