Description

Appearance and bark

Magnolia cylindrica grows as a deciduous, small tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 10 meters. The smooth Stammborke is greyish - white, silver gray to light brown. The bark of young branches is pressed, hairy pale yellow. Older branches have a reddish or purplish brown bark. The branches give off a pungent odor when they are injured or bruised. The terminal buds have a shaggy, yellowish or silvery pubescence. Vegetative buds are smaller and have a less dense pubescence on.

Sheet

The leaves are arranged opposite one another on the branches. The 5-25 mm long petiole is pressed, hairy pale yellow and wrinkled on the top. The simple, membranous or leathery leaf blade is elliptical with a length of 5.7 to 14 inches and a width of usually 2 to 5 ( 1.6 to 6.5 ) inches, narrow to normal obovate, obovate -oblong or broad - lanceolate with a broadly wedge -shaped or almost rounded Spreitenbasis and a blunt, pointed or tailed end. On the upper leaf surface which branches off from the main nerve lateral nerves are sublime. The bald, shiny upper leaf surface is dark green. The blue - green to gray - green leaf underside is pressed, pale yellow hairy or bald and frosted. The membranous stipules are fused to the petiole, leaving after dropping a leaf scar on the petiole, the / 3 as long as the blade handle 1 /6 to 1.

Flower

The flowering period extends from April to June, the flowers emerge before the first leaves. The egg-shaped buds are pale yellowish-gray to silver-gray long haired. The flowers are single, terminal and erect on a thick, densely hairy pale yellow, 1 to 1.5 cm long stem.

The large flowers are hermaphroditic. The perianth consists of an outer circle with three at a length of 12 to 20 millimeters and a width of about 4 millimeters short, membranous, sepal -like, free bloom cladding and a middle and an inner circle of three white and at the base of the top red speckled, nailed with a length of 6.5 to 10 inches and a width of 2.5 to 4.5 inches at the base, ovate, free bloom cladding. The three innermost bracts are usually more or less the same until the end of anthesis. Next up (inside ) there are many spirally arranged 10 to 13 millimeters long, free stamens with broadly - flattened, pink to pale - red stamens. Next up (inside ) there are many spirally arranged about 1.2 inches long, cylindrical - ovate, greenish, free carpels.

Fruit and seeds

Pendant Sammelbalgfrucht is at a length of 5 to 7.5 centimeters and a diameter of 1.8 to 2.5 centimeters thick, cylindrical. The follicle is first greenish and has purple to reddish stains on. When ripe in August or September is bursting at the dark purple - black colored follicle. The brown seed is heart-shaped at a length of 7 to 10 millimeters and a thickness 9-11 mm, lateral flattened grooved lower side width, wedge-shaped at their base and at the top a V-shape.

Chromosome number

The chromosome number is 2n = 4x = 76 Magnolia cylindrica is therefore tetraploid.

Occurrence

The natural range of Magnolia cylindrica is located in eastern China, and extends over the provinces of Anhui, Fujian, southern Henan, Hubei, Jiangxi and Zhejiang.

Magnolia cylindrica thrives in forests at altitudes 700-1600 m.

System

The first description as Magnolia cylindrica was made in 1927 by Ernest Henry Wilson in the Journal of the Arnold Arboretum, 8, (2 ), pp. 109 A synonym for Magnolia cylindrica EHWilson is Yulania cylindrica ( EHWilson ) DLFU. In the Flora of China in 2008, it is believed that Yulania has the rank of a genus, and therefore the valid name Yulania cylindrica ( EHWilson ) DLFU, published in the Journal of Wuhan Botanical Research, 19, 2001, p 198.

Magnolia cylindrica belongs to the sub-section Yulania from the section Yulania in the subgenus Yulania within the genus Magnolia (Magnolia ).

Use

Magnolia cylindrica is used as ornamental plant use. Also, flower buds of this type are collected for medical purposes.

Endangering

Magnolia cylindrica is in the IUCN Red List as "vulnerable" out. The main hazard reasons the thinning of forests and collecting the flower buds for medical purposes apply. It is noted, however, that a re-evaluation of risks is required.
