Magnus VI of Norway

Magnus VI. Håkonsson called lagabætir ( = Gesetzesverbesserer ), ( * May 1, 1238, † May 9, 1280 ) was from 1263 to 1280 King of Norway. He married Ingeborg Eriksdatter. With her he got the sons Erik and Håkon.

He was the son Håkon Håkonsson and Margaret Skulesdatter and was married to Ingeborg, daughter of Erik IV of Denmark Plogpenning. He was a learned man, as his legislative work identifies. He received the title of king in 1257, he was crowned 1261st

Magnus broke with the expansionist policies of his father and initiated peace negotiations with Alexander III. of Scotland, which ended in 1266 in the Treaty of Perth. In it, he gave the Isle of Man and the Hebrides in favor of Scotland against 4000 marks sterling and an annual output of 100 marks ( since 1270 but not paid the Scots ). In return, Scotland recognized the Norwegian sovereignty over Orkney and Shetland. The reason for this peace was also in the Norwegian- British treaty of commerce of 1223rd Trade between England and Norway suffered from the war, and the English merchants pushed for peace.

He got his nickname because of his great legal reform. On the Thing gatherings of the year 1274 the new land law ( Landslov ) on which the year 1276 the new city law ( bylov ) was adopted. It has also been adapted for Iceland and the Faroe Islands. In a new hirðskrá the duties and privileges of the aristocracy were redefined. However, when he intervened in the legal relations of the Church, he was opposed by Archbishop Jon Raudes. This led to protracted negotiations between church and state, which were then settled in 1277 in Tønsberg with a settlement.

His pragmatic attitude was reflected in the succession dispute over his wife Ingeborg expressed that he was able to settle peacefully without armed conflict with Denmark. In the 1270ern he tried unsuccessfully to mediate in the disputes about the succession in Sweden. He founded the Norwegian diplomacy as a separate apparatus.

In May 1280 the great reformer of Norway died at the age of 42 years.
