Mahmoud Karim

Mahmoud El Karim (* 1916 in Egypt, † September 9, 1999 ) was an Egyptian squash players.

Career

Mahmoud El Karim began with 15 years of playing squash and few years later one of the most successful players of his time. His greatest achievements are his four title wins at the British Open, which was considered at the time as the unofficial world championship. He won the tournament in 1947 against the Englishman Jim Dear and defended the title in the next three years. In 1948, he defeated again Jim Dear, 1949 Dears compatriot Brian Phillips and 1950 he defeated in the final of the Indian Abdul Bari. Also in 1951 and 1952 he reached the final of the tournament, but lost both games smoothly with 0:3 against Hashim Khan from Pakistan. His defeat in 1952 was also his last game at the British Open, where he no longer took up to end of his career. In 1957 and 1958 he was the Tournament of Champions win.

After his career as an active player Mahmoud El Karim moved to Montreal in Canada, where it was squash coach. At the age of 72 years he moved back to Cairo and was Squash Director at the Gezira Club. On 9 September 1999, Mahmoud El Karim died at the age of 83 years. He had six sons and two daughters.
