Mahmoud Othman

Mahmud Osman ( born 1938 in Sulaymaniyah ) is a Kurdish politician from Iraq. Mahmud Osman studied medicine at the University of Sulaymaniyah and a doctorate after that. He began his political career when he 1962, the Kurdistan Democratic Party ( KDP ) joined. Within the party, he rose up quickly, so that he was the deputy of Mustafa Barzani was 1968. In 1970, he negotiated with the Iraqi government on a cease-fire agreement.

In 1980 he founded after leaving the KDP along with Rasul Mahmend and Adnan Mufti, the Kurdish Socialist Party. Thus Mahmud Osman kicked the two traditional Kurdish parties KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan of (PUK ). In 1992 he took part in the election of the Kurdish parliament. But in the same year he went to England, and returned back in 1995. As an important politician he negotiated in 2001 between the KDP and PUK for an armistice. After the U.S. invasion and the third Gulf War Osman was a member of the Iraqi Governing Council. Turkey protested his membership because it relations with the Kurdistan Workers' Party reproached him for close to what will make him a mouthpiece for the PKK in Iraqi Governing Council. Since 2004, Mahmud Osman is a member of the Iraqi parliament.
