Mahmoud Taleghani

Ayatollah Mahmoud Taleghani (Persian محمود طالقانی, * 1911/1914 in Galird at Taleghan; † 9 September 1979), a Shiite cleric Alem and reform in Iran and supporters of the so-called was " Islamic socialism ".

Life and work

In the course of the riots in Iran in June 1963 Taleghani was first arrested and sentenced to four years in prison. Later he was again arrested for allegedly disturbing the peace and sentenced to six years in prison. As part of a policy of national reconciliation by Prime Minister Jafar Sharif - Emami, he was released in October 1978. Taleghani was until the return of Ruhollah Khomeini as a leader of the Islamic revolution. He was called the Father of the revolutionaries and the father of Volksmodschahedin.

Taleghani was famous for his programmatic rather a progressive, leftist attitude. As chairman of the Assembly of Experts, he spoke in favor of a direct popular sovereignty.
