Main (lunar crater)

47.43

Main is an impact crater in the northern hemisphere of the Moon near the North Pole. Its southern edge is connected to the southern crater Challis and the crater floor lying on a plane connecting the crater through a narrow gap in the ramparts. North -northwest lies the crater combination of Gioja and Byrd.

Main consists of originally three craters that were united by the flooding of their interior crater with lava to a substantially circular formation with bulges in the west and northeast. The same lava flows are also responsible for the connection of Main and Challis. The remaining rim of Main is a low slope, which lies with the surrounding terrain almost on a level. A small and roughly bowl-shaped crater, which lacks the western border, covers the eastern edge. The crater floor is almost flat and is scarred by a number of mini craters that stretch in the form of a band from southwest to northeast across the crater interior.
