Maixent Coly

Maixent Coly ( born September 10, 1949 in Affiniam, Ziguinchor, † August 24, 2010 in Dakar ) was a Senegalese theologian and Roman Catholic Bishop of Ziguinchor.

Life

Maixent Coly studied after graduating from the Collège Sacré Cœur in Dakar from 1971 to 1974 Law at the University of Dakar. 1974/75 he was a teacher at the Collège Didier -Marie de Saint- Louis. In 1975 he entered the seminary in Koumi in Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso, and studied philosophy and theology 1975 until 1980. He received on 30 December 1980, the ordination. Subsequently, he was a teacher at the Petit Séminaire Saint- Louis, Ziguinchor and secretary of the Bishop of Ziguinchor. From 1983 to 1987 he studied at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and was subsequently professor of Sacred Scripture at the seminary in Djibélor - Brin.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop in the Diocese of Ziguinchor in 1993. He received his episcopal consecration on December 11, 1993 Augustin Sagna, acting Bishop of Ziguinchor; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Korhogo, Ivory Coast, Auguste Nobou, and Pierre Eyt, Archbishop of Bordeaux. 1995 he was appointed Bishop of Ziguinchor.

He died after a long illness at the effects of a stroke at Hôpital Principal, Dakar.

Coly was committed to peace in Casamance ( Casamance conflict), to stop the ongoing military conflict since 1990 between the Government of Senegal and the Movement of Democratic Forces de la Casamance ( MFDC ). Maixent Coly initiated the peace agreements of 2001, 2002 and 2003.
