Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Arabic مكتوم بن راشد آل مكتوم Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, * 1943 in Schindagha, Dubai, † January 4, 2006 in Gold Coast, Australia) was Vice- President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and from 1990 until his death Emir of Dubai.

Life

Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 1943, the eldest of four sons of Sheikh Rashid bin Said Al Maktoum born. His brothers are Sheikh Muhammad, who then next to his post as defense minister of the UAE was also the successor of Sheikh Maktoum, the Emir of Dubai, Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE, Sheikh Hamdan (Minister of Finance and Industry ) and Sheikh Ahmad.

After the independence of the United Arab Emirates on 2 December 1971, he became its first Prime Minister, and had hold office until April 25, 1979, when he resigned in favor of his father. After his father's death on 7 October 1990, he was re-appointed to the office and took over the government in the Emirate of Dubai.

Maktoum died on 4 January 2006 during a trip to Australia at the Palazzo Versace Hotel Gold Coast in Queensland. On the occasion of his death a 40-day national mourning was placed in the United Arab Emirates.
