Malacolimax

Pilzschnegel ( Malacolimax tenellus )

Malacolimax is a genus of sea slugs family of slug ( Limacidae ) from the subordination of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). It currently contains only three or four species.

Features

The species of the genus Malacolimax are rather small to medium sized representatives of the slug with stretched a length of about 5 cm. The keel is designed quite short and weak. The species are often uniformly colored or with only weak longitudinal bands, rarely spotted. The sole is solid.

In hermaphroditic genital apparatus of the penis is short piston-shaped, spherical or cylindrical. The short vas deferens ( vas deferens ) and Penisretraktor adjacent to the penis and have grown with it. Internally, the penis is a complex pilasters, which almost fills the lumen. On the pilasters sits a stimulator. The fallopian tube is excessively long, the stem of the spermathecae is short.

The bursa copulatrix empties into the penis or near the junction of the penis and atrium. The prostate is fused with the fallopian tubes.

In the digestive tract of the intestine is not twisted with three loops, the second loop of intestine is shorter than the third and first loop.

Geographical distribution, habitat and behavior

The species of the genus Malacolimax are limited to Western and Central Europe, Southeast Europe and the Canary Islands.

Taxonomy

The genus Malacolimax was erected in 1868 by August Wilhelm Malm. The type species is Limax tenellus Müller, 1774 ( Pilzschnegel ) by monotype. Malacolimax was considered by some authors as a subgenus of Limax. Currently, three or four species assigned to the genus, with Malacolimax kostalii is considered by some authors as a synonym of Malacolimax tenellus. In contrast, the Fauna Europaea performs four species as valid.
