Limacoidea

Black slug ( Limax cinereoniger )

The Limacoidea are a superfamily of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ), are summarized in the nude and semi- slugs who do not own a small box in or on her coat.

Features

The Limacoidea are large to very large slugs that may outstretched reach 25 cm in length. The coat is, with few exceptions rather small and located in the front part of the body. The housing is usually greatly reduced. In the family of glass snails of the transition from a snail to a slug is especially good to watch. There is a small species with housing and species whose case has been completely transferred to the mantle. The sole is divided into three parts. As apomorphic accordance applies the so-called stimulator in the genital opening of the animals whose exact function is, however, little is known. However, the feature is in multiple groups partially or completely been reduced and thus complicates the relationship research.

Lifestyle and deposits

The types of Limacoidea are predominantly herbivores or omnivores. The Wurmschnegel family lives mostly predatory or feed on eggs of other snails. The superfamily was originally native to Europe, North Africa, West and Central Asia. Many species have been deported world today.

System

The superfamily Limacoidea s.str. is divided into four families:

  • Family slug ( Rafinesque - Schmaltz Limacidae, 1815)
  • Family slugs ( Agriolimacidae Wagner, 1935)
  • Family Wurmschnegel ( van Goethem Boettgerillidae, 1972)
  • Family glass snails ( Vitrinidae Fitzinger, 1833)

Some authors give the superfamily a much larger scale. The largest extent has the superfamily in the work of Hausdorf (1998), who in his cladistic analysis, however, referred to the superfamily as Limacoidea sensu lato.

Phylogeny

Bernhard Hausdorf published in 1998 a comprehensive cladistic analysis of Limacoidea sl, also called " Limacoid clade ". The scope of the superfamily, however, was limited by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) to the above four families. According to this model is the " Limacoid clade " sister taxon of the Helicoidea that was not further analyzed.
