Parmacelloidea

Soil Kielschnegel ( Tandonia budapestensis ) from the family of Kielschnegel ( Milacidae )

The Parma Cello Idea are a superfamily of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ), are summarized in the slugs who do not own a small box in her mantle shield.

Features

The Parma Cello Idea are medium to large slugs that may outstretched reach 20 cm in length. In the adult animals in the shell plate is still a small bowl available, which is a vestige of the original screw housing. The Mantelschnegeln the straight hatched juvenile animals can even retire to the small case before it is overgrown by the mantle shield and only plate-like continues to grow. The Parma Cello Idea are characterized by a horseshoe pit on the shell plate. The feature is interpreted as apomorphic match.

Lifestyle and deposits

The types of Parmaceloidea are primarily herbivores but also eat carrion or meat eaters. They occur in humid, but also in dry habitats. The representatives of the superfamily were originally confined to Europe, North Africa and West Asia. Individual species have been abducted today but worldwide.

System

The superfamily is subdivided into three families:

The family and superfamily name Cryptellidae Gray, 1855 or Cryptelloidea is the oldest scientific name for this family group. He, however, turned into oblivion and is considered nomen oblitum ( forgotten name). Thus the name Parmacellidae remains valid.

Phylogeny

Bernd Hausdorf 1998, a comprehensive cladistic analysis of the relationship Limacoidea sl ( = " Limacoid clade " sensu Bouchet and Rocroi 2005) published. In this cladogram the Parma Cello Idea form the sister taxon of an unnamed group consisting of the actual Limacoidea ( s.str. ), The Zonitoidea and Helicarionoidea. The internal phylogeny within the Parmcelloidea has not been resolved yet.
