Málaga Cathedral

Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación is that of the Diocese of Málaga in Málaga Cathedral. It is located near the harbor in the city.

History

Malaga's cathedral was built by the Christian conquerors from 1528 about a mosque. Although in the original plans two towers had been planned, was later for lack of money only a completed what the cathedral, " La Manquita " ( "little one armed woman " ) is called popular, earning its name. She is the incarnation, that is, the incarnation of God, consecrated.

As a result of the 254 -year-long construction phase until the year 1782, there is the church of a mixture of different styles. Is predominant in the Renaissance style, but also from elements of Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassicism.

Three decorated archways made ​​of marble of different colors. Above the doors there are some medallions. The medallions on the side doors represent the patron saints San Ciriaco and Santa Paula, the middle shows a Bible scene.

The three naves are equally high; the average is wider than the lateral. To ensure the stability despite the high altitude, the architect used a special system. He joined the cross-shaped pillars with Corinthian columns and combined elements of the classical tradition with those of the Renaissance.

The interior is dominated by the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The choir stalls from the 17th century mahogany and cedar were made by Luis Ortiz.

The whole church is closed by a magnificently decorated vaulted ceiling upwards. The decoration of the stalls was completed by Pedro de Mena. He also produced 40 statues for the church.

The church has two pulpits from Cabra marble, decorated with religious motifs.

The side chapels contain works of art as a weeping mother of Pedro de Mena, a large Virgin of the Rosary by Alonso Cano and Christ on the Cross by Alonso de Mena.

Organs

On the gospel side and the Epistle side of the choir, there are two large organs, which were built by Julián de la Orden 1781-1783. Each of the organs has 48 bass and 59 treble registers on three manuals. Together they have more than 9000 pipes.

The Epistelorgel was restored by Taller de Organería Acitores 1998.
