Mali Federation

The Mali Federation ( also referred to as the Sudanese Republic) was a short-lived state in West Africa, consisting of the former French colonies French Sudan (now the Republic of Mali) and Senegal, who propagated the " negritude ". It was founded in January 1959 and broke out in August 1960 apart again. Originally Upper Volta also had (later Burkina Faso) and Dahomey (later Benin) of the Federation connected, but retired again in March 1959, and instead joined the Union Sahel - Benin. The capital of the Mali Federation was Dakar.

The name of the Federation should avoid the cars from the French country name " Sudan " and continued the tradition of the ancient kingdom of Mali, which existed from the 11th to the 18th century and reached beyond the borders of present-day Republic of Mali addition.

The head of government of the federation, Modibo Keïta, said on January 17, 1959 in his closing speech to the Constituent Assembly in Dakar after the proclamation of the Federation:

The Federation achieved its independence on 20 June 1960. On 28 June, the Security Council confirmed by Resolution 139, a recording of the Federation to the United Nations.
