Malmesbury Branch Line

The Malmesbury Railway was a British railway company in Wiltshire in England.

History

1864 was provided Malmesbury to connect by means of a railway line from Stroud by Christian Malford Halt along the Avon to the rail network. Because of differences in the main owner of the building contractors Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Railway, the Midland Railway and the Great Western Railway, the building was, however, set in 1871.

Then a reduced concept was developed and the Malmesbury Railway received on 25 July 1872, the concession for the construction of the 8.5 kilometer-long railway line from Malmesbury to Dauntsey. The construction costs were estimated at 60,000 pounds. In Dauntsey was a connection to the Great Western Main Line between Bristol and London Paddington. Owners of the company were local landowners and entrepreneurs, as well as 50% of the Great Western Railway. This was also the operator.

The opening of the line took place on 17 December 1877. Effective from July 1, 1880 Company was taken over by the Great Western Railway.
