Malteser International

Malteser International is the worldwide relief agency since 2005 of the Sovereign Order of Malta for humanitarian aid and since January 1, 2013, a registered association. The non-governmental organization operates with about 100 projects in 20 countries in Africa, Asia and America.

History

Malteser International eV is from the German Malteser and his department emerged Foreign Service. In 1992, the Sovereign Order of Malta ECOM (Emergency Corps of the Order of Malta) - consisting of the German Foreign Service and several other national associations of the Order of Malta. The order of ECOM was to afford after natural disasters or other crisis situations such as in Kosovo in 1999 or 2003 after the earthquake in Bam (Iran) help. After the 2004 tsunami in South and Southeast Asia Malteser International was founded in 2005 as the international relief agency of the Order of Malta for humanitarian aid. The tasks are beyond the scope of emergency relief, because Malteser International also supports the reconstruction towards sustainable development.

Values ​​and ethical principles

It provides aid for people in need, regardless of their religion, ethnicity or political persuasion. Christian values ​​and the humanitarian principles of impartiality and independence are the foundation of the work. Malteser International has been working as a Catholic aid organization in non- Christian countries dominated and therefore also employs staff with other religious background. The organization works to around 90 percent with local staff as well as with local partner organizations and church structures on site together. Malteser International has undertaken to comply with national and international codes and standards such as the "Code of Conduct " ( Principles of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGOs in Disaster Response Programmes) or the " Sphere Project ".

Organization and Structure

24 associations and priories of the Order of Malta are members of Malteser International. With the Bureau, the Secretary-General and his deputy as well as the spiritual companion, they form the General Assembly. The Bureau consists of the President and up to six Vice-Presidents. The full-time Secretary General manages the operational activities within the budget and the strategy of Malteser International.
