Mamilla Cemetery

The Mamilla Cemetery is an historic Muslim cemetery west of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is located about 700 m northwest of the Jaffa Gate.

History

The cemetery was first mentioned in Arabic and Persian manuscripts from the 11th century. " According to tradition, found in the area in the seventh century companions of the Prophet Mohammed their final resting place. "

After the First Arab- Israeli War, the grounds in 1948 came under the control of the Israeli authorities. 2004 has decided to build on the site under the name Center for Human Dignity, a " Museum of Tolerance " after a car park had been established previously for decades over the graves of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Parts of the site had also been diverted to build the Independence Park and other buildings.

To the west of the cemetery was a shopping and leisure street for pedestrians, the Mamilla Mall.
