Manantenina

Manantenina is a town in southeastern Madagascar and seat of the rural municipality ( commune rural). The place is located in the region Anosy, about 120 km north of the city Tolagnaro right off shore.

Geography and vegetation

The place is situated on the south bank of the river Manampanihy to 21 meters above sea level and about 3 kilometers west of the coast of the Indian Ocean. Just a few kilometers wide, characterized by dunes of coast, contains a rich flora with pitcher plants. Further inland, the land rises gradually westward to 60-80 meters and forms a 8-14 km wide Verebnungsfläche, which was originally passed by forest. Today the forest has almost completely disappeared by illegal slash and burn, his place was a savannah with Ravenala and various grass species.

Population and Economy

The population is predominantly of the tribe ( Research Committee ) of the Antanosy. At the last census 2001 18.905 inhabitants were counted, the annual population growth is 2.9 %. The main economic activities are fishing (50 % ), Agriculture (35%) and livestock (10 %). The most important crops are cassava, rice and sweet potatoes. During the first decade of the 21st century, the village and the surrounding villages were repeatedly affected by cyclones and crop failure, which has led to acute malnutrition of the population.

Infrastructure

The place is connected via the unpaved national road 12a with the capital of the region Tolagnaro. There is a post office, an easy- equipped hospital ( Centre de Santé de Base II) as well as a secondary and several primary schools.

Bauxite

In the area of the municipality ( service Géologique ) was discovered in 1961 by the bauxite Geological Survey of Madagascar. This bauxite is developed on a 25 to 60 meters above the sea level Verebnungsfläche whose base is formed of aluminum-rich gneisses. In the early 1970s, extensive drilling was carried out; it could be detected by the year 1973 165 million tons of ore. After the deposit for several decades had remained unnoticed by international producer of aluminum, Rio Tinto Alcan signed end of 2006, an agreement with a Malagasy company for the joint production of the ore and the establishment of an aluminum refinery.
