Manchester and Lawrence Railroad

The Manchester and Lawrence Railroad (M & L) is a former railway company in New Hampshire and Massachusetts (United States).

History

The Company was incorporated on 30 June 1847, intended to connect the two cities Lawrence (Massachusetts ) and Manchester (New Hampshire) with a railway line. End of 1849, the 44 km long railway line was opened in Manchester - Lawrence. Lying in Massachusetts section the Boston and Maine Railroad had built. With operation opening the M & L leased this branch.

The Concord Railroad, which at the other end of the line, in Manchester, joined, in turn, leased the Manchester & Lawrence from 1 November 1850 to November 1, 1853 and again from December 1, 1856 to August 1, 1867. But even after the end of the lease led the Concord Railroad operations on the M & L. Early 1860s built both companies jointly Hooksett Branch Railroad between Hooksett and Suncook. 1889 founded the M & L together with the Concord and Montreal Railroad, the assignee of the Concord Railroad, the Suncook Valley Extension Railroad, the Suncook Valley Railroad a few miles further into the Suncook Valley extended into it.

On June 1, 1887, the Boston & Maine leased the Manchester and Lawrence Railroad for 50 years and took over the same management. On December 1, 1919 was the final merger of the Manchester & Lawrence with the Boston and Maine Railroad, which was retroactive to January 1 of the year effect. Today consists of the main line of the M & L only the tail of Lawrence to Salem, which is used by Pan Am Railways.
