Mandibular advancement splint

In mandibular advancement (from Latin Protrusio " advancing, Fort bumping " ) is individually after impression of the teeth laboratory engineered, adjustable rail systems for the treatment of certain "sleep -disordered breathing ," a form of sleep disorder.

Use

The rails come in patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS ) and upper airway resistance syndrome ( UARS ) are used. The method is one of several alternatives. It is also used in cases schwergradigen instead of " nasal continuous positive airway pressure " ( CPAP) for intolerance or lack of treatment compliance.

Through intra- orally transmitted mandibular ( UPS ) lower jaw, tongue and other structures are positioned to the front and open the bite. Thus, the narrowing of the pharyngeal space is reduced, the airways are kept open mechanically during sleep and airway resistance decreases.

Before this method can be used, it must be examined whether the dental conditions for long-term use are given. After impression of the teeth, the individual mandibular advancement device is made on the basis of jaw models of the patient.

History

The first descriptions of these tracks are from the early 1980s, have been developed as mandibular advancement devices for orthodontic models. Since then, the models have been greatly improved.
