Manea Mănescu

Manea Mănescu ( born August 9, 1916 in Brăila, † February 27, 2009 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian politician.

Biography

Mănescu was from August 1944 Member of the Romanian Communist Party ( PCR). Of 3 October 1955 to 19 March 1957, he held the office of the Romanian Minister of Finance. With a break of three years (1979 to 1982) he was from 1960 a member of the Central Committee (CC ) of the PCR until it was disbanded in 1989.

During the reign of Nicolae Ceauşescu Mănescu belonged from 1969 to 1979 and from 1984 to 1989 the Political Executive Committee of the PCR on. From 1967 to 1972 he was Chairman of the Economic Council and then from 13 October 1972 to February 27, 1974 Chairman of the State Committee for Planning. In parallel, in 1972 he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. From 28 March 1974 to 30 March 1979, he was Prime Minister of Romania.

Mănescu also was the head of science and culture department in the PCR.

On 22 December 1989 he accompanied together with Emil Bobu the couple Nicolae and Elena Ceauşescu in its attempt to escape in a helicopter from the Central Committee building. He was charged with the suppression of the uprising in February 1990 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Here he was convicted, his membership of the Romanian Academy has been withdrawn pursuant to the Articles.
