Manfred Mayrhofer

Manfred Mayrhofer (born 26 September 1926 in Linz, † October 31, 2011 in Vienna) was as Indo-Europeanist specialized in Indo- Iranian languages ​​.

Life

Mayrhofer studied Indo-European, Semitic and philosophy in Graz. Here he received his doctorate in 1949, 1951, the Habilitation. Since 1953 he worked at the University of Würzburg, first as a guest lecturer, since 1958 as an adjunct professor since 1959 as a full professor. From 1963 to 1966 he was a full professor in Saarbrücken, from 1966 until his retirement in 1990 as a full professor at the University of Vienna. He is best known for his Etymological Dictionary of the Old Indian.
