Manganese (VII ) oxide is a chemical compound with the formula Mn2O7. The oily liquid is highly reactive, since it is a powerful oxidant. The first description was in 1860.

Production and representation

Manganese (VII ) oxide is obtained by the reaction of sulfuric acid with potassium permanganate.

Properties

At low temperatures, the compound is present as a crystalline solid before, reflects the green light and looks red in transmitted light. The connection consists of a pair of tetrahedrons which are connected via an oxygen atom, which can be described with the structural formula -O- O3Mn MnO3. The external Mn -O bonds have a length of 158.5 pm, the central bond of 177 pm. The central Mn Mn-O bond has an angle of 120.7 °. These properties are similar Pyrosulfaten, pyrophosphates, dichromates and other compounds R2O7 (where R represents chlorine or metals such as technetium or rhenium ).

Safety

Manganese (VII ) oxide is a highly reactive compound. It decomposes above -10 ° C slowly and explosively from 95 ° C, the explosion can also be triggered by shock or impurities. Between these temperatures explosion is observed. Are formed here manganese (IV ) oxide ( manganese dioxide ), oxygen, and small amounts of ozone, which gives the compound a strong odor.

You chars most organic materials, such as wood, partly explosive reaction and is therefore highly corrosive. With acetone or other solvents, self-ignition is performed. In carbon tetrachloride, it is relatively stable.
