Mannitol salt agar

Mannitol Salt Agar ( also Chapman Agar) is a selective medium for the isolation of pathogenic staphylococci and micrococci. Applies this test, especially in the analysis of food and microbiological tests in hospitals.

Due to the high salt content of the medium most other bacteria are prevented from growing. Phenol red and meat extract condition at neutral pH, slightly reddish color. It is a growing bacterium to be able to use mannitol as carbon source, as will the surrounding medium due to the pH - drop to a yellowish color. The utilization of mannitol is regarded as evidence for the pathogenicity of the tested bacteria. Further evidence of pathogenicity may be the study of its lipase activity.
