Manshiyat Naser

Manschiyyet Nasser (also Manshiet Nasser, Nasser Manschijet or Manschijet Nasr, Arab منشية ناصر, DMG Manšīyat Nasir ) is an informal district of the Egyptian capital Cairo at the foot of Muqattam Hill ( المقطم ). A majority of the homes and businesses in his area was without official approval. The district has about 600,000 inhabitants.

The Zabbalin (Arabic زبالين, garbage viewfinder ') live there. This about 60,000 to 70,000 people mostly Coptic faith ensure even today with its highly laden donkey carts not only for a very reliable additional waste collection in Cairo, but also of a very comprehensive garbage sorting and recycling of many materials. They are known to drive pigs through the city, which feed on edible, organic waste of the public road landscape and its meat is then sold in shops all over Cairo Copts.

The economic basis in the garbage city are the people who work in the informal sector. Most families have specialized in a particular type of waste sorting and so on are able, despite the introduction of a public refuse collection to draw up enough money for their upkeep. In May 2009, the Egyptian government ordered the slaughter of all pigs in the country, as the animals were falsely suspected to be the cause of the so-called "swine flu". The garbage collector therefore lost a part of their livelihood.

The cave church of St. Sama'an, which is used by the Copts in the garbage city, is the largest church in the Middle East with a capacity for 20,000 worshipers. The district is also known by the 15 meter high Muqattam - rock composed of limestone and broke off a large boulder from the in September 2008 and thus resulted in many dead and destroyed homes.
