Manuel António Mendes dos Santos

Manuel António Mendes dos Santos CMF ( born March 20, 1960 in Lamego, Portugal), Bishop of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Life

Dos Santos was born in Lamego, Northern Portugal. He has three brothers and four sisters. He studied theology and philosophy from 1978 to 1985 at the Instituto dos Humana Ciencias e Teologicas in Porto and at the Catholic University of Lisbon. In 1980 he became a novice, put on 26 September 1980 in Fatima the time, on 16 September 1983, the final vows and became religious brother in the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He was ordained a priest on 13 June 1985 by Bishop Antonio de Castro Monteiro Xavier. 1994/95 he was in São Tomé a missionary and director of three parishes. After his return to Portugal, he worked for several years in Setúbal as a priest. Since 2001 he is religious provincial of his order in Portugal. From 2003 to 2005 he was chairman of the National Conference of Major Superiors.

On 1 December 2006 he became Bishop of São Tomé and Principe as the successor of Abílio Rodas de Sousa Ribas. The bishop He was ordained by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins on 17 February 2007.
