Manuel Arteaga y Betancourt

Cardinal Manuel Arteaga y Betancourt ( born December 28, 1879 in Camaguey, Cuba, † March 20, 1963 in Havana ) was Archbishop of Havana.

Life

Manuel Arteaga studied in Caracas and Lima, the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy. He was ordained a deacon in 1904 and priest in 1902. Then worked until 1912 in Cumana, Venezuela, as a pastor. From 1912 to 1915 he worked as a parish priest in Camagüey, Cuba. In the years 1915-1941 he served as Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Havana administration.

1941 Pope Pius XII appointed him. Archbishop of Havana. In 1946, he took it as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina to the College of Cardinals. After the seizure of power by Fidel Castro Cardinal Arteaga was politically persecuted. In the years 1961 and 1962 he sought asylum in the Argentine Embassy. He died on March 20, 1963 and was buried in Havana.

Manuel Arteaga was Grand Prior of the Cuban Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.
